Situated in arguably one of the most desirable and central locations in Singapore, the newly launched Hotel Jen Tanglin promised us a complete hotel & dining experience. We obviously couldn’t refuse and took them up on their offer.
If you haven’t heard of the brand Hotel Jen, then I’m sure it’s only a matter of time as it continues to rapidly expand across the region under the watchful management of Shangri-La. Previously known as the Trader’s Hotel – a tired and somewhat dated property – the newly re-branded Hotel Jen welcomes you with a quirky, old-retro feel that leaves you with a smile on your face.
The friendly staff are on the ball and checking in was very quick.
Location, Location, Location
Situated in the heart of Singapore, we simply loved the fact that the hotel was connected to Tanglin Mall by a joined pathway. Despite finding some great shopping & dining options, you will also find a supermarket stocked with everything you will ever need. If malls are not your thing, a short stroll from the hotel will lead you directly to the majestic Singapore Botanical Gardens (15 min walk) – a 156-year old tropical garden enriched in local history. One of the only tropical gardens, to be honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Walk in the other direction and you will be in the world famous Orchard Road shopping belt in under 20 minuets – what else can you ask for?
Singapore Botanical Gardens – a short stroll away.
The ROOM
We have been told that none of the 565 rooms are the same, as they all coordinate thematically around the design theme of iconic Singaporean symbols (bicycle, orchid, goldfish and shop house). Connecting to Wi-Fi is super easy and available throughout the hotel. Each room also comes complete with USB charger outlets, high pressure walk-in showers, and king-sized “floating” beds with 300-thread count linen (yes, I slept like a baby). The executive suites also come with a small pantry, complete with microwave & a SMEG fridge.
The look and feel of the room was modern & slick and ours had a great view of the ‘frog shaped’ swimming pool.
Club Lounge
The Club Lounge on level 17 is designed to cater to your every need. We were told to “grab a small nibble” on the Sunday morning when we woke so we could save some room for the amazing brunch at 12pm. To our surprise, the Club Lounge had more to offer than just nibbles. Stocked with a full breakfast spread, amazing juices and quite possibly the best coffee machine I’ve seen in a hotel lounge (ever!), this lounge experience will certainly “hit the spot” – as they say!
BRUNCH – fit for a king (or queen!)
We were invited by Jen to sample her weekend brunch at the beautifully designed J65 restaurant in the hotel lobby. As mentioned, we deliberately tried to have a small breakfast so there was plenty of room left for what can only be described as remarkable arrangement of delicacies. The champagne was flowing freely (of course) as we made our way through the succession of food on offer. The seafood corner dished up fresh lobster, prawns and scallops in what seemed like a bottomless tray. Accompanied by an array of healthy salad options, there was certainly something for everyone.
For the meat lovers among us, expect nothing but some very well cooked roast beef, pork knuckle and bone lamb served with a great selection of sides – from rosemary potatoes, mash and grilled vegetables. There’s also a cold cuts & cheese station in case you want to keep things light. Nonetheless, one thing Jen promises is that you won’t leave hungry. Period.
NOTES!
The brunch at J65 is great in value – $15 nett for a single plate that can be piled high from the buffet or you can dish out $29 nett if you go for the buffet option. There is also an option to top-up to include the free flow champagne.
Lastly – ask for Nabil who will not only dazzle you with his charm but can also help you plan your day with the best tips from a friendly (and super cool) local!

LOOKING FOR A GREAT COFFEE & QUICK SNACK INSTEAD?
Located in the lobby of the hotel, Jen’s Kitchen On The Go is a hip 24 hour dining concept that serves up great coffee (yes, it’s hard to find good coffee in the city!) and an array of delicious & quick food options. Our favorite was the selection of so called Dirty Milkshakes – Death by Brownie could send you to another dimension and back!
